10 Things You May Not Know About Bananas

Here are 10 interesting facts about bananas.

1. Better enjoy your bananas while you can because there is a very strong rumour going around that the banana is about to go extinct. This is apparently because it is not a naturally occurring fruit, but is the product of selective breeding, or whatever the name is when it's applied to fruit. It seems that all bananas are, genetically speaking, identical so they could all be carried off by the same disease in one fell swoop.

2. The banana has been described as the perfect food. It is cheap, nutritious and easily digestible.

3. Many theories have been put forward as to why the banana will not grow straight, unlike other fruits and vegetables such as the carrot or the cucumber, but none have stood the test of time. There have been some attempts over the years to breed straight bananas, funded by the supermarket chains who would find them more convenient, but the banana has remained steadfastly bent.

4. When someone is a bit crazy, they might be described as being a bit bananas, or going bananas. Interestingly, in this context the word bananas and the word nuts mean the same thing.

5. Banana has been used as a slang term for a dollar. This must be used with great care. I heard a story that a man advertised his car for sale at a price of 1000 bananas. A lady came to his house, gave him 1000 bananas, told him that by law he had to sell the car at the advertised price, and drove away. This is a true story, it happened in Chicago.

6. Another slang use of the word is when someone is described as a 'nana, meaning a bit of an idiot. This appears in the song, "My Old Man's A Dustman," "he looks a proper nana, in his great big hobnail boots."

7. A popular advertising campaign in the 1960s on behalf of the Banana Marketing Board exhorted members of the public to "Unzip A Banana." The success of this campaign may have been due to the slightly suggestive association with the phallic shape of the fruit.

8. When people in France want to be jocular with each other on New Year's Eve, they shout "Banana!" because it sounds like "Bonne Annee" which of course means Happy New Year.

9. The Great Banana Skin Hoax began in 1967, apparently as a joke in a student magazine in California, but it rapidly spread around the world and was widely believed. You had to scrape the insides off a banana skin, and then dry and prepare these scrapings in a particular way, before putting them into a pipe and smoking them. If you prepared it correctly, you would experience a high similar to that of marijuana. Thousands of people tried it, and it is interesting that most of them, when they got no results, believed that it must have been because they had not prepared it correctly. The hoax was immortalized in the song "Mellow Yellow" by the English pop singer Donovan.

There are many other fascinating facts about bananas, but I think that's quite enough for one day.
