How To Remember Sine, Cosine, Tangent

The Trig Formulas, or Trigonometric Formulas, for finding the Sine, Cosine, and Tangent of an angle in a triangle, have given students a lot of trouble over the years. Here are a few ways that people have devised to help remember them. Choose your favorite!

First of all, the formulas themselves:

Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse

Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse

Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent

Easy, aren't they? (not)

Probably the most common way people remember them is by thinking of the name of the fictitious volcano, SOHCAHTOA. This is OK but a bit boring, and not always secure. I have seen it spelt as Soccertoa, which is not a whole lot of use.

A bit more interesting is:

Tommy On A
Ship Of His
Caught A Herring

or this one:

The Old Army
Colonel And His
Son On Holiday

or maybe this one:

Sex On Holiday
Comes After Having
Tankards Of Ale

Which one is YOUR favourite?
