Kenya Some Interesting Facts

By Robert Paterson

Kenya is a republic in the east of Africa, comprising nearly 600000 sq km, with a population of around 31 million. The country achieved independence in 1963. The capital is Nairobi; the currency is the Kenyan Shilling, which is divided into 100 cents. Swahili is the official language, though English is widely spoken. There are several distinct ethnic groups, of which the Kikuyu are the most numerous. Around two-thirds of the population are officially Christian, but large numbers of people worship local deities.

Kenya is crossed by the Equator, and it has a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures and humidity. The south western plateau rises to between 600 and 3000 meters above sea level, and includes Mt Kenya with a height of 5200m (over 17000 ft). The famous Great Rift Valley is in the west of the country; there is a hot dry semi-desert in the north. The country has vast areas of national park, which attract large numbers of tourists.

The region was first colonised by the Portuguese in the 16th century, until it came under British control as the East African Protectorate in 1895. The British colony of Kenya came into existence in 1920. After World War Two, an independence movement began to make its presence felt, culminating in the bloodshed of the Mau Mau rebellion. Independence was granted in 1963 and, a year later, the Republic of Kenya was inaugurated under its first leader Jomo Kenyata.
