Some Facts About Sweden

By Robert Paterson

Sweden is a kingdom in the northern part of the continent of Europe, comprising just over 400 thousand sq km, with a population of around 8 million. It has been a member of the European Union since 1995, but, at the time of writing, it still maintains its own currency, the Swedish Krona. The capital city is Stockholm and the time zone is GMT +1.

Sweden occupies the eastern side of the Scandinavian peninsula; it has many lakes and large areas of forest. It has very cold winters and mild summers. In the north of the country, there is continuous daylight for much of the summer.

Historically, Sweden was for a long time dominated by its neighbour, Denmark. It was also for a long time in a political union with its other Scandinavian neighbour, Norway, but this was dissolved in 1905. Sweden has been neutral since the year 1814. The predominant religion of the country is Lutheran Protestant, including some 97% of the population. Politically, Sweden is generally Social Democrat. The Head of State is a constitutional monarch; the government is led by a Prime Minister, and the Parliament is unicameral (one house).

The country has long enjoyed a high standard of living, due mainly to its neutrality, its cheap and plentiful hydroelectric power and its mineral riches. It has around 15% of the world's uranium deposits and has large reserves of iron ore, which is responsible for important exports to other countries in Europe. There was once a very comprehensive welfare state program, but this has been severely cut back due to economic necessity since the early 1990's.

Despite its small size and population, Sweden has had a great deal of influence on the rest of the world. Notable people from Sweden include, in modern times, the famous pop group Abba, who won the Eurovision song contest with the song "Waterloo", and went on to produce a string of number one hits over the ensuing years. Also notable is the legendary tennis player Bjorn Borg.
