Water Filter Systems - Best For Health?
There is a lot of concern nowadays about the quality (or lack of it) of the water that comes out of your kitchen faucet. Rightly so, as we shall see. But what can you do about it? First we must look at why the water supply is so suspect nowadays, and then move to look at the alternatives. Many people are now beginning to realize that a regular intake of pure, clean water is absolutely vital for your health and well being. But most public water supplies are woefully inadequate for this. It comes as rather a shock when you discover that your tap water may contain heavy metals such as uranium or radium, but it is nonetheless true. These can enter the water from rock formations in a quite natural way, but they are not taken out before they reach your home. Home water supplies frequently contain lead, since there are still many old lead pipes in the main water system, and again, this makes it to your kitchen tap. The water authorities add chlorine to kill off viruses and bacteria, but it does not get them all. And there is evidence that chlorine can be harmful to people as well. Chlorine adds a quite unpleasant taste to the water. The companies often add fluorides too, though the benefits of this additive are still a subject for debate. Industrial waste, such as paint, chemicals, or solvents, is frequently tipped into the water system, either illegally or accidentally. This finds its way back into domestic supplies, even those that use rainwater can be contaminated. Industrial waste is a large contributor to the so called "acid rain." Many municipal water suppliers are not able to use fresh water, so they have to use reclaimed water from the sewage system. Many of the contaminants are not taken out by this process, which is not really pleasant to think about. This is not to imply that the companies are not trying their best. It is just that the task they have is too great to solve without being prohibitively expensive. In view of all this, consumers concerned about their health and that of their families have looked for alternatives. One is to drink water that you buy in a plastic bottle, and this has now become big business. Every grocery store now has large quantities of bottled water on display. But research has shown that frequently the bottled water is no better than that from the tap. Also there is evidence that the water can react with the plastic over time. The bottles are heavy to carry home from the store. Disposal of the plastic leads to environmental problems. A second alternative is to use a water filtration system in your home. This avoids the problems associated with bottled water, and takes out a very high percentage of the impurities that come through the taps.
