What Exactly Are K Numbers?
Ever heard of K numbers? These are the numbers that are used to identify the musical works of the composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who many believe was the greatest composer that ever lived. In the 19th century, Dr Kochel, a German musicologist, compiled a catalogue of all the works of Mozart that were then known, and gave each one a number. The catalogue numbers were intended to be in order of composition, but later scholarship has revised quite a few of them. However, it is amazing how many of the pieces have retained their original K number in the public imagination, in spite of being officially re-numbered. The K numbers are useful because many of Mozart's compositions do not have a name as such, other than a title like Symphony in A, or Piano Concerto in E flat. Without the numbers it would be very confusing to try to identify them all. Some pieces have been discovered since Kochel, so they have KA numbers (for Kochel Appendix). An entertaining parlour game for music lovers is to try to guess the composition, given the K number, and vice versa. Famous examples are, the Jupiter symphony K551, Requiem K626 and so on. The piece that appears first in Kochel, so numbered K1, is a charming little minuet for harpsichord, written when the composer was just 5 years old. |
